But, alas, she is not omnipotent, and she sometimes struggles to explain diseases that affected people hundreds of years ago. Various hypotheses explain the existence of some of them, and it is to be hoped that they all remained in ancient history.

Laughing death kuru

A bizarre and incurable sickness known as kuru was discovered among some cannibal tribes in New Guinea around the middle of the twentieth century. The patient had trouble moving at first, feeling cramped and clumsy. Then a smile appeared on the face of the patient, which remained with him until the last minutes of his life.

The individual began to jerk his head at the final stage, and he began to experience convulsions and paralysis. Symptoms could appear over a period of weeks or months, but the ultimate consequence was always the same: death. The brains of people who died from kuru were described as resembling sponges by European doctors who performed autopsies. The kuru disease no longer exists, and the practice of eating defeated enemies has also vanished. It is believed to be related to cannibalism and refers to prion illnesses, according to scientists.

Phospho Necrosis of the jaw

The symptoms of this disease were an abnormal growth in bones of the lower jaw. The lower part of the unfortunate’s face was sometimes covered in bones that glowed in the dark.

This sickness was common in large cities in Europe and the United States in the 19th century, and it was thought to be incurable. Doctors were unable to find a cure for this disease, and surgery only provided temporary relief to the sufferer. So it was until someone realized that phospho necrosis of the jaw affects mainly those who work in the match and ammunition industries. They had to come into touch with white phosphorus during manufacture, which caused a fatal disease.

Plague of Athens

The only epidemic of this disease occurred in BC in Athens. It all started with a sudden rise in body temperature. The sick person began to vomit blood and diarrhea, and blood even came out of their eyes in some cases.

There were no survivors of the Athenian plague, which had a 100% mortality rate. The Greek historian Thucydides left us a detailed description of this tragedy, which is why the outbreak is frequently referred to as the Thucydides plague. The disease that swept Athens scared the determined Spartans, who marched up to the city and started to prepare a siege.

It’s difficult to identify which pathogen caused the disease, but scientists believe the symptoms are extremely similar to those found in Ebola patients in Africa.

glass delusion

Various sources from the Middle Ages describe this bizarre state. The illness expressed itself when a person suddenly realized that he was made of glass and was terrified of breaking into pieces. The morbid state expressed itself in attacks: a person could be sitting in a tavern with friends, drinking beer and joking around, when all of a sudden he would start screaming at them, begging them not to touch him. The rich and the poor were both sick of the glass illusion. There were even kings among them.

In the 15th century, the most renowned “glass” patient was King Charles VI of France. During a long trip, Charles once slashed to death many close associates with a sword while defending himself from an imaginary attack.

English sweating fever

In the 14th and 15th centuries, outbreaks of this disease were seen across Europe, most famously in England. The disease started with a high fever and excessive sweating, after which the victim suddenly lost strength and died within a few hours, or was entirely cured in a significantly smaller percentage of cases.

It was thought that if a person had such a fever, he might die in his sleep, so the sick were kept awake as much as possible. Although descriptions of these epidemics in medieval histories are sufficient, symptoms alone are insufficient to determine the cause. Modern epidemiologists believe that English sweating fever had an infectious origin and was linked to poor sanitary conditions like many other deadly diseases at the period.

virgin disease

The symptoms of this disease were weakness, enlargement of the joints and their soreness, dizziness, nausea, and, most importantly, a green tint of the skin. Because the disease mostly affected young girls, doctors in the 18th and 19th centuries blamed it on a lack of sex.

No one knows why it happened, but modern experts believe that iron deficiency in young women is to blame.

Must Read: The secret of immortality lies in our brain

exploding teeth

Several independent sources from several nations have recorded cases of people’s teeth exploding, making it difficult to deny the authenticity of these claims. It began as a simple painful toothache that grew unbearable, and then the painful tooth exploded into the mouth with a crack.

The explosions were so powerful that they knocked the unfortunate ones off their feet. The enigma of exploding teeth could not be solved because such cases do not occur today. However, scientists believe that the explosion in the oral cavity was caused by contact seals made of lead, tin, or silver with hydrogen.

National Hotel Disease

Guests at the National Hotel in Washington, D.C., were infected in the 1850s with the sickness. The patient’s tongue swelled up, intestines were inflamed, and severe diarrhea began during their stay in the rooms, and sometimes after they left. These symptoms could go disappear for weeks or months, only to reappear later. People have been known to suffer for years until the disease finally vanished.

From the perspective of 19th-century medicine, what occurred to the hotel guests was unexplainable, thus everyone began to blame the curse for the problem. However, it was eventually discovered that the evil forces were not to blame and that the epidemic was caused by an infection in the water supply. The hotel’s sewer pipe reportedly burst, and the toxins had seeped into the drinking water.

Modern medicine can transplant organs and restart a heart that has stopped beating.
